Understanding Safeguarding

Safeguarding means:
✔ Protecting children from maltreatment.
✔ Preventing impairment of children’s health or development.
✔ Ensuring children grow up in safe, supportive environments.
✔ Taking action to enable all children to have the best life chances.

Recognising Concerns

You may notice safeguarding concerns through:

  • Physical signs of harm or neglect.

  • Verbal disclosures from children.

  • Emotional distress or sudden behavioural changes.

  • Worrying accounts shared by a child or someone else.

Harm to a child may be caused by:
✔ A parent or carer.
✔ A family member or friend.
✔ Another child.
✔ A stranger.
✔ A member of staff.

What to Do If a Child Discloses Harm or Abuse

  1. Listen carefully – Do not display shock or disbelief. Accept what the child is saying.

  2. Reassure them – Let them know it’s not their fault and they were right to tell someone.

  3. Avoid direct questioning – Let the child share in their own words.

  4. Do not criticize the alleged perpetrator.

  5. Explain what happens next – Let them know who will be informed.

  6. Be honest about confidentiality – Explain that you must report the concern to keep them safe.

  7. Depending on their age and understanding, explain that you may need to talk to others for support.

  8. Record the disclosure – Use a Concern Form on this page, noting:

    • Date, time, and location of disclosure.

    • Exact words used by the child.

    • Actions taken.

    • Any witnesses present.

  9. Submit the completed form.

E-Safety Guidelines

🔹 No personal mobile phone use is allowed while working with children, except in designated areas (e.g., the staff room).
🔹 Do not take photographs of children unless explicit parental consent has been obtained.

Final Reminder

Safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility. If you have any concerns, no matter how small, report them immediately to the Safeguarding Team.
